Friday Sep 26th | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM | Kids 8+ years old| Catapult Academy Fair Day Comics Workshop: On This Day…History Happened! Have you ever read an unusual headline that sparked your imagination? Do facts in books beg to be turned into stories in your mind? If so, join us at Catapult Academy on September 29th for "On This Day…History Happened!", a workshop for artists aged 8 and above. In this two-hour illustration intensive, students will learn: · Research practices with an emphasis on primary sources available to the public · How to choose a storytelling point-of-view · How to narrow the focus · Blending words and images to tell a story · Thumbnailing to loose sketches · Creating under deadline Students will have a choice of historic events that occurred on September 29: a NASA space shuttle launch from 1988 or the first speech transmission across the Atlantic in 1915. Using instructor-provided research materials and photographs, students will identify key moments in the story, highlight potential characters and storytelling angles, and create a unique comic of 4 or more panels that will bring these moments from the past to life. All materials included. -- Instructor: Jenna Smith A writer, visual artist, freelance editor, and creativity educator, Jenna’s published work includes essays, short stories, and poetry. She holds a MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, where she specialized in nonfiction graphic novels. Her artistic endeavors include digital illustration, comics, textile creations, and small-scale multimedia sculptures. As a writer-in-residence with Writers in the Schools, Jenna has worked with young writers in hospital settings, community workshops, school placements, and Menil museum visits. Jenna believes in the power of exploration and curiosity and is delighted to see students’ self-confidence improve when they learn to trust their own words and experiences to the page. -- Please note: All participants must register and pay online in advance.
